NFL Owners Meetings: Dolphins 50% Sale To Ross Approved

NFL Owners Approve Huizenga's Sale
Of 50% Of Dolphins To Developer
NFL owners yesterday formally approved Dolphins Owner Wayne Huizenga's 50% sale of the team to Related Cos. Chair & CEO Stephen Ross, according to Jeff Darlington of the MIAMI HERALD. Huizenga will "remain the general partner for the team" for the time being, giving his "decision-making power over Ross." Huizenga said of Ross, "He'll be the general partner. There's no doubt about that. A lot will depend on his business situation and my business situation. We'll know when the time is right." More Huizenga: "I love the Dolphins, and I want them to do really well in the future. In order to do that, I wanted to be sure that the Dolphins were left in the hands of someone who had the wherewithal to make the decisions they need to make." Huizenga also said that he will "maintain a small stake in the organization" after Ross assumes full control (MIAMI HERALD, 4/1). Ross: "This is a great privilege for me. I'm a great fan. I know it's about winning football games" (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 4/1). More Ross: "Now I got a lot to learn. Sitting in the league meetings for the first time, it's all new" (PALM BEACH POST, 4/1).

LIGHTS ON: The NFL announced the Sunday and Monday night games of its '08 opening weekend, which will begin Thursday, September 4 with Redskins-Giants on NBC. The Colts will host the Bears on September 7 in an 8:15pm ET game on NBC's "Sunday Night Football," the first regular-season at Lucas Oil Stadium. A September 8 "MNF" doubleheader will feature Vikings-Packers at 7:00pm and Broncos-Raiders at 10:15pm. The rest of the '08 regular-season schedule will be completed and announced later this month (NFL).

NFL NETWORK: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said that the league "remains committed to its television channel, the NFL Network, despite its ongoing distribution disputes with several cable carriers." However, Colts President & GM Bill Polian, when asked about the NFL Network, said, "I don't get it" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 3/31).

MEETING NOTES: SI's Peter King reported the meetings kicked off Sunday night with a presentation from Goldman Sachs Chair & CEO Lloyd Blankfein, who spoke about "how to get good people, motivate them and keep them when they've accomplished great things." Falcons Owner Arthur Blank suggested that America was "in a recession now," and Blankfein responded that if we are, "it's a shallow one." Goodell asked Blankfein how Goldman Sachs "viewed the sports industry today," and Blankfein "was bullish on it -- particularly as an international business" (SI.com, 3/31)....A proposal restricting the length of a player's hair is "going to be tabled until May and (Goodell) will meet with the NFL Players Committee before, in fact, they do anything" ("NFL Live," ESPN, 3/31)....The proposal to reseed playoff teams "has been given mixed reviews by coaches and owners'' (N.Y. TIMES, 4/1).
