Power Suit: MASN Files Suit Against Comcast Over Regional Ads

MASN this month filed a complaint in Baltimore City Circuit Court against Comcast, the largest cable provider in the Baltimore-DC corridor, claiming that Comcast is "threatening to block the network from running regional advertisements," according to Liz Farmer of the Maryland DAILY RECORD. The complaint said that "preventing MASN from having advertising specific to both its Baltimore and [DC] markets would cause the network 'irreparable harm.'" The complaint: "All the while, [CSN Mid-Atlantic] will be permitted by Comcast to continue to capitalize on the competitive imbalance that Comcast has purposely created." The complaint, which alleges Comcast is "threatening to block ads when the Orioles' season begins" today, claims that blocking MASN's split feeds "would hurt MASN's ability to compete against [CSN] for regional advertising sales and revenue." MASN, owned "almost entirely by the Orioles and partially by the Nationals," claims "breach of contract and asks for a temporary restraining order and a permanent injunction against Comcast, enabling MASN to continue running its regional advertising." Comcast spokesperson Aimee Metrick declined comment on the suit (Maryland DAILY RECORD, 3/28).
