MLB Civil Rights Game Could Leave Memphis, Join Regular Season
The Mets defeated the White Sox 3-2 Saturday in MLB's second Civil Rights Game in front of an announced crowd of 7,717 fans at AutoZone Park in Memphis, according to Marion Morgan of the Memphis COMMERCIAL APPEAL. Triple-A PCL Memphis Redbirds President & GM Dave Chase is "hoping to engage in discussions with [MLB] officials in the next couple of months to ensure the game returns next season." MLB Exec VP/Baseball Operations Jimmy Lee Solomon said that MLB selects the site on a "year-by-year decision." Solomon: "I think that Memphis has a particular appeal with the Civil Rights museum. ... But there are other cities that have the same appeal, and I have been very clear that cities like Atlanta, cities like Dallas/Arlington, [K.C], all of those cities appeal to us, too." Chase said that "more has to be done locally if the game is going to grow in Memphis, starting with a better marketing plan." Morgan noted "steep ticket prices of $30, $50 and $75 may have prevented some from attending the game" (Memphis COMMERCIAL APPEAL, 3/30). Solomon said that playing the game in a major league site would allow the league a "chance to take this game from a slot as the final Spring Training exhibition to the Opening Night of the regular season, a concept which is certainly part of the thought process." Solomon: "A regular-season game would almost necessarily mean that it would have to be played in a Major League stadium. If we did do that, it would definitely dictate where we'd end up playing" (MLB.com, 3/29).
