NHL To Increase Salary Cap Dramatically Again Next Season

NHL Salary Cap Next Season
Expected To Be Around $56.3M
The NHL's salary cap will increase again next season, and it will "do so rather dramatically," according to Larry Brooks of the N.Y. POST. Brooks reported the NHLPA, at a Wednesday meeting of certified agents chaired by NHLPA Exec Dir Paul Kelly, projected "revenues to reach $2.575B this season, an 11.1[%] increase over the 2006-07 Hockey Related Revenue (HRR) of $2.318B." The cap "should increase at a slightly higher rate because the players' share of the gross increases from 55.5[%] to 56.333[%] at the $2.5B revenue threshold." Brooks noted the projection " assumes the players will once again exercise their option to approve a five [%] inflation bump." The NHLPA "estimates that the cap will be approximately $56.3M" next season, a $6M increase from this year. Brooks reported the floor will be $40M, or "slightly above that." Of all 30 franchises, only the Blue Jackets, Predators and Coyotes "will have invested less in payroll this season.''  Multiple sources attribute the growth of NHL revenues since the end of the '04-05 lockout to a "combination of the increased strength of the Canadian dollar and steadily escalating ticket prices" (N.Y. POST, 3/30).

TV TIME: In Boston, Kevin Paul Dupont wrote NHL players "have little to worry about" in terms of payroll. But the No. 1 topic on their minds is, "no surprise, television. Specifically, they want to know when their games are going to be on ESPN." Kelly: "It's usually the first thing they ask." NBC this week will "decide if it wants to continue its partnership with the NHL." Dupont: "Given the success of the Jan. 1 outdoor game it beamed out of Buffalo, ... look for NBC to stay married to hockey" (BOSTON GLOBE, 3/30).
