Broadband, Mobile Phone Coverage Part Of BBC's Wimbledon Plan

BBC's Wimbledon Coverage To Include
Broadband, Mobile Phone Offerings
The BBC's new five-year deal that secures rights to Wimbledon until 2014 is "designed to overhaul its coverage of the event for the digital age," according to Gibson & Jago of the Manchester GUARDIAN. While rival broadcasters had "expected the All England Club to put the rights out to tender for the first time," the BBC "moved quickly to secure the rights." The new deal will allow the BBC, which has covered Wimbledon since '27, to show matches on demand "up to seven days after they have been played." Viewers also will be able to watch "via broadband and, for the first time, on mobile phones." The deal also includes "exclusive radio rights." The BBC said that it was "negotiating to offer the iPlayer catch-up service from this year" (Manchester GUARDIAN, 3/27).
