Packers To Retire Favre's No. 4
Jersey Sometime During Season |
Packers President & CEO Mark Murphy Wednesday said that the team at some point this season "will retire [QB Brett] Favre's No. 4,'' according to Don Walker of the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL. Murphy said that he "spoke with Favre about the matter" but stressed that "plans are preliminary, with many details yet to be worked out." Murphy: "Our initial thought is to retire his number during a game." Murphy said of the team's marketing mission in the post-Favre era: " I think our marketing strategies have never been based on one person. It's more than that.'' Packers Dir of Marketing & Corporate Sales Craig Benzel added, "I think because of how we have handled our business before and after Brett Favre, there is that consistency that doesn't make you say all of a sudden, when he retires, that you have to change things immediately." Both Murphy and Benzel said that Favre's retirement "did not necessarily mean the Packers would take a financial hit in the years ahead" as the team, for the FY ending March 31, are expected to "report to shareholders that the team had a solid financial performance" (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 3/20).
