Bucks, GM Harris Sever Ties; Kohl To Look For Outside Replacement

Bucks Sever Ties With GM Harris
The Bucks Wednesday "severed their relationship" with GM Larry Harris, and Bucks Owner Herb Kohl said that he will "look outside the organization" for Harris' replacement, according to Tom Enlund of the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL. Kohl said, "Going forward, the needs were such that, I believe, we needed to have an outside person with a fresh approach to take a look at our basketball organization to see how we can get better and get back to the playoffs." Kohl added that Harris, whose contract was set to expire June 30, "requested an early determination on whether he would be retained." Enlund reports Kohl consulted with Bucks VP/Business Operations John Steinmiller, VP Ron Walter and CFO Mike Burr on letting Harris go, but he said that "ultimately, he took full responsibility for the decision." Kohl said that Dir of Player Personnel Dave Babcock would "run the basketball operation and head the college draft preparation" until the team names a new GM. There currently are no candidates for the job (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 3/20). Bucks G Bobby Simmons said of Harris' departure, "It wasn't surprising. We pretty much figured something was going to happen the way things were going" (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 3/20).

GET OUT OF THE WAY: In Milwaukee, Michael Hunt writes since the '00-01 season, when the Bucks reached the Eastern Conference finals, Kohl "has made one mistake after another, hiring the wrong coach, allowing his lost inner circle to interfere in personnel decisions and dragging out Harris' tenure at least one year too long." Hunt: "Nothing is going to change until Kohl hires a strong, independent-minded basketball guy and gets the heck out of his way" (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 3/20).

NOT PASSING THE BUCKS: Kohl, at the press conference announcing Harris' departure, said that “despite low attendance, poor revenues and an aging arena, … he'll never take the Bucks out of Milwaukee.” Kohl: "I'm not in this business to make any annual profits. The value of the asset fortunately has appreciated over the years. On an annual basis, it's a money-losing proposition.'' More Kohl: "The revenue streams are inadequate. I put in considerable amounts of money every year.'' Kohl said "at some point, we'll have to have a new facility." He also said that he hopes the NBA will come up with a revenue sharing model “similar to those in the NFL and MLB” (AP, 3/20).
