Youngstown Officials Driving Away Chevrolet Centre Suitors

Youngstown Seeking Management
Company To Operate Chevrolet Centre
Youngstown, Ohio, city officials who "tried to get the better of three major companies that had expressed an interest in managing and operating" the city-owned Chevrolet Centre may have caused the city to have to "bear the entire financial burden of the arena," according to Bertram de Souza of the Youngstown VINDICATOR. The city had been in negotiations with Philadelphia-based Global Spectrum and SMG, and with a partnership of The Cavaliers Operating Company of Cleveland and Chicago-based Int'l Facilities Group. The companies on February 26 received a letter from Youngstown Finance Dir David Bozanich asking each if they were prepared to "enter into a long-term management contract with the City which guarantees a net payment to the City in the amount of $900,000 on an annual basis." De Souza reported the city "it seems ... knew [the companies] would not take the letter seriously, because the administration followed up with another proposal," in which the city asked that the arena's "current management structure ... be retained." The city "only wants to hire a consultant," and "experienced sports and entertainment entities are being asked to offer their services to a team whose members have not been trained or hired by them." The second proposal has "already been turned down by the Cavaliers Operating Company and could well be rejected by a second company this week." De Souza: "So what happens if all three companies walk away? The city will be left holding the bag -- and the future of the arena will be bleak, indeed. The city does not have the financial wherewithal to bring in big-name entertainment that would draw huge crowds and enable the arena to turn a profit" (Youngstown VINDICATOR, 3/16).
