Center Of Attention: Kevin Mawae Elected NFLPA President

NFLPA Elects Mawae Union President
Titans C Kevin Mawae has been elected as the new NFLPA President, replacing Troy Vincent, at the union’s annual meeting in Hawaii, NFLPA Exec Director Gene Upshaw confirmed in an e-mail. On the NFLPA Web site, Upshaw wrote, “Troy will be remembered as one of the NFLPA’s great leaders. I’ve worked with past presidents like John Mackey, Bill Curry, Mike Kenn, Tom Condon and Trace Armstrong, and all were willing to make sacrifices and risk their careers to advance the cause of the players. Troy joins these men in leaving his footprints in the sand of time and setting the standard for our next leader. Troy, we will miss you, and we thank you for your concern and leadership as NFLPA president" (Liz Mullen, SportsBusiness Journal).

MORE VINCENT IN THE FUTURE? NFL Network’s Adam Schefter said even though Mawae has replaced Vincent as NFLPA Player President, that "doesn’t mean that one day (Vincent) will not be the successor to Gene Upshaw." Schefter: "I think everybody agrees that Troy Vincent, with all that he brings, is the logical successor” (“NFL Total Access,” NFL Network, 3/18).
