Media Notes

A HOUSTON CHRONICLE editorial on MLB's new press credential conditions stated, "Given the scandal over players' use of performance-enhancing drugs, baseball doesn't need another public relations debacle from needlessly restraining game reportage." Chronicle Editor Jeff Cohen: "It is essential that fans have objective and plentiful news coverage of the home team. We strongly oppose efforts by the league to engage in prior restraint and hope that reasonable minds can come together to resolve this issue." The editorial noted there are "indications that the media voices are being heeded in [Commissioner Bud Selig's] office. After meeting with news representatives earlier this month, league officials softened their stance on several key issues" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 3/16).
