Cardinals President Lamping Leaves For Meadowlands Stadium Gig

Lamping Leaving Cardinals To
Lead New Meadowlands Stadium Co.
The New Meadowlands Stadium Co., the joint venture formed by the Jets and NFL Giants to develop their new NFL facility, has hired MARK LAMPING as CEO. Lamping was most recently MLB Cardinals President and played a principal role in building new Busch Stadium. Lamping also has worked in sales and marketing for Anheuser-Busch. He starts his new job April 1. The $1.7B NFL stadium is 30% complete and on schedule to open for the 2010 season (Don Muret, SportsBusiness Journal). Lamping said that he "wasn't looking to leave St. Louis," but that he was "drawn to the opportunity to coordinate" the new Meadowlands stadium venture. Lamping: "This is a chance to do something different. What's happening at the Meadowlands is a once-in-a-lifetime project. ... I'm the first employee hired, and you don't get the opportunity to build things from scratch, particularly on this prominent of a stage." In St. Louis, Bernie Miklasz notes Lamping "helped with the smooth transition of the franchise when" A-B sold the Cardinals to BILL DEWITT JR.'s group in '95. The Cardinals will promote Senior VP/Business Development BILL DEWITT III, who is "leading the task to get the downtown Ballpark Village real estate project off the ground," to President (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 3/14).

OUTSIDE THE BOX: NFL Giants co-Owner JOHN MARA said Lamping's hiring was a "little out of the box because he wasn't known as a building operator but as an executive who oversaw one." Mara added Busch Stadium is "one of the best facilities in the country." In N.Y., Richard Sandomir reports Lamping's responsibilities will include "running the stadium's marketing, selling its sponsorships, naming rights and luxury suites, and attracting non-football events." Lamping said one of the goals of the new stadium is to "make sure each team and each team's fans feel that it's their stadium.'' Lamping in '07 was identified by an executive search firm and met in N.Y. with Mara, Giants Chair & Exec VP STEVE TISCH, Jets Owner WOODY JOHNSON and Jets President JAY CROSS (N.Y. TIMES, 3/14).
