Could NASCAR Be Entering New Era Of Manufacturer Competition?

Manufacturer Parity In Sprint
Cup Series Pleasing NASCAR
With the top four drivers in the current NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings representing four different car models and each manufacturer having at least two drivers in the top 12, the '08 season's early results raise the "possibility that a new era of wide-open competition among automakers might be dawning," according to Nate Ryan of USA TODAY. NASCAR is "pleased by the potential of having its fiercest manufacturer battle since perhaps 1992." NASCAR VP/Competition Robin Pemberton: "It's always been the goal. Things look good across the board." Pemberton added that NASCAR, under the "most radical set of rules in the last 15 years ... helped foster a more level playing field by standardizing cars with its next-generation chassis." Pemberton: "Someone is going to get an advantage; that always happens. We're trying to make it easier for a smaller team or a group that may get behind periodically. We try to regulate the sport the same every year, and we have a tighter box we keep everyone in with the engine. Everyone's on par on parts and pieces" (USA TODAY, 3/12). After Kyle Busch's win in Sunday's Sprint Cup Kobalt Tools 500, the first Cup victory by Toyota, NASCAR.com's Joe Menzer asked, "Is it just one win, or is it merely the tip of a very large iceberg that ultimately will sink the other three American manufacturers who have long ruled the sport?" Menzer: "Instead of fearing Toyota, maybe all the Toyota haters should take a look at one of the things that always has made America great. It's called competition" (NASCAR.com, 3/10).
