Favre Could Become An Appealing On-Air Option For Networks

Networks Likely To Try And Lure
Favre Into Broadcast Booth |
Former Packers QB Brett Favre, who retired yesterday, “might be irresistible” as a TV personality, according to Michael Hiestand of USA TODAY. Favre “ranks higher than all but seven sportscasters in any sport” according to a poll by The Marketing Arm measuring attributes such as likeability and trustworthiness. While networks likely could offer Favre a variety of roles, a "studio gig, rather than working games, makes more sense.” However, the nets “wouldn’t elaborate Tuesday on plans to corral Favre.” ESPN VP/Communications Mike Soltys: “We’re set in our rotation of talent. But when you have somebody of this magnitude, it’s something you have to consider.” CBS Senior VP/Communications LeslieAnne Wade: “We have no plans for any new analysts.” Fox Sports President Ed Goren: “He is a terrific personality, and any network would be lucky to have him.” NFL Network Exec Producer Eric Weinberger: “Brett’s candid and off-the-cuff personality would provide great entertainment value.” Fox’ Jay Glazer said that Favre was “great in production meetings.” Glazer: "Its something you’d pay the two-drink minimum to hear -- hilarious, honest. … ‘Brett Favre Unplugged' would be [a] great TV special” (USA TODAY, 3/5). ESPN’s Tony Kornheiser said of Favre's retirement, "My seat in the ‘Monday Night’ booth just got a little hotter and a little smaller, didn’t it?” (“PTI,” ESPN, 3/4).
PACK MENTALITY During yesterday's “Mike & Mike in the Morning,” ESPN’s Chris Mortensen credited Glazer with breaking the story of Favre's retirement. Mortensen told ESPN’s Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic, "Bus Cook, Brett’s longtime agent, confirmed what Jay Glazer of Fox has reported that Brett did tell (Packers coach) Mike McCarthy last night that he’s finished" (“Mike & Mike in the Morning,” ESPN2, 3/4). In Milwaukee, Bob Wolfley writes under the header, “Glazer Starts Media Storm.” Mortensen “scored a major coup when Favre left a long message on Mortensen’s voicemail explaining the reason why he decided to retire.” ESPN “devoted much of its programming Tuesday to Favre’s retirement," and all four Milwaukee network affiliates pre-empted their morning daytime programs to “cover the story for some time” (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 3/5). Last night’s edition of ABC’s “World News,” CBS’ “Evening News” and NBC’s “Nightly News” all aired reports on Favre's retirement (THE DAILY).
