Wild Acquire Troubled Enforcer Chris Simon At Trade Deadline

Wild Acquire Oft-Suspended
Simon At NHL Trade Deadline
The Wild at yesterday’s trade deadline acquired in a trade with the Islanders LW Chris Simon, a “longtime enforcer whose career has been stained with eight suspensions, including the longest in NHL history,” according to Michael Russo of the Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE. Wild GM Doug Risebrough said Simon “knows the eyes of the league are on him, and I think he’s really excited about a fresh start.” Simon received a 30-game suspension for “trying to slice a fallen [Penguins LW] Jarrko Ruttu’s leg with his skate blade” on December 15. Simon also was forced to sit the first five games of the season and the last 20 of last season for slashing Rangers LW Ryan Hollweg in the face (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 2/27). In St. Paul, John Shipley writes the trade “seemed to carry more baggage than potential.” It is a “move that didn’t seem to make the [Wild] much better.” However, Risebrough said, “I know he has had issues, there’s no doubt. But I wouldn’t call it baggage” (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 2/27). Also in St. Paul, Tom Powers writes under the header, “Gulp, Minnesota Wild Get A Goon In Chris Simon.” Powers: “The Wild have been looking for a spark. They may have acquired an entire forest fire” (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 2/27). In Minneapolis, Patrick Reusse writes tongue in cheek that it has been “two decades since a local sports executive made a personnel move that made this much sense.” When former Vikings GM Mike Lynn signed in '98 DB Mossy Cade, a convicted rapist, the “outrage was immediate” and Lynn “dropped Cade three days later” (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 2/27).
