Orioles Dish Out $7.7M In '07 Draft Signing Bonuses

The Orioles awarded $7.7M in signing bonuses to their draft picks in '07, which included a draft record $6M bonus for top pick C Matt Wieters. The Astros, who spent only $500,000 on draft pick bonuses after the team refused to go over the MLB recommended slot for a single player, ended up being the first team since the '80 Yankees to fail to sign a player before the fifth round. After having ten of the first 175 picks in the draft, the Blue Jays spent $6.3M on bonuses, up 152% from their expenditures last year. The following presents MLB team-by-team signing bonus expenditures for '07, as well as from recent years (Baseball America Prospect Handbook).

The Giants had three picks in the first round of the '07 MLB draft and went over the MLB recommended slot on each pick. Only six first-round picks ended up signing for less than the MLB recommended slot money. The following lists the '07 MLB first round draft picks, along with their signing bonus and what bonus MLB recommended for that particular slot (THE DAILY).
