Dick's Sporting Goods Acquires Maxfli
Brand From TaylorMade-adidas |
TaylorMade-adidas Golf has sold its Maxfli brand and related trademarks to Dick's Sporting Goods. TaylorMade-adidas will retain Maxfli's Noodle trademark and all golf ball patents. The sale went into effect February 11; financial details were not available (TaylorMade-adidas). TaylorMade will operate the Noodle as a standalone brand, and a company official said that it "did not enter into an agreement to manufacture Maxfli balls for Dick's." GOLFWEEK's Adam Schupak noted the acquisition adds to Dick's "stable of private-label golf equipment brands," which also includes Walter Hagen and Slazenger. TaylorMade acquired Maxfli and its patent portfolio in '02, but "struggled to rejuvenate the venerable, yet tired ball brand." Also, the "inexpensive Maxfli Noodle -- while commercially successful -- cheapened Maxfli's once-premium reputation." TaylorMade this year has downsized the Maxfli line to only one model, the Power Max, selling at less than $20 per dozen (GOLFWEEK.com, 2/15). GOLF WORLD's E. Michael Johnson notes Maxfli in January '04 held almost 10% of the golf ball marketshare at on- and off-course shops, but now currently owns "about half that, with much of it coming" from the Noodle brand (GOLF WORLD, 2/22 issue). Golf Channel's Casey Bierer reported TaylorMade now will "focus its branding efforts on the Tour Preferred and Burner families of golf balls" (Golf Channel, 2/19).
