“I agree with Dale Earnhardt, Jr.’s claims that it’s only a ploy to get incentives from drivers that let loose of their explicit language only to be fined.”

“I guess NASCAR wants other drivers to display their personalities for the first 6 races while Tony and Kurt work off the probation.”

“I think it’s a good thing NASCAR is encouraging its drivers to show more emotion and personality. Frankly, it should have never reached the point where NASCAR felt it had to do so. I have to think that fans want to see their favorite drivers as they really are. They like to see emotions, because emotions can lead to conflict.”

“Let's try to keep it at least PG rated, for goodness sakes, but let the drivers speak their minds. Don't put a camera and a microphone in a driver's face the second he climbs out of a wrecked race car though.”

BUILDING THE BUZZ: Sports Media Challenge's Buzz Manager analyzed the online buzz surrounding NASCAR’s “back-to-the-basics” movement, which is meant to encourage drivers to show more personality by being more lenient with punishments. Bloggers who felt this was a good move for the sport were counted as positive, making up 53.33% of the buzz. Bloggers who felt this was a poor marketing plan were tallied as negative, representing 26.67% of the posts.Click here for more information.See www.sportsbusinessdaily.com for more info.

  • The topic ranked 3 out of 10 on the buzz indicationg a low level of interest.
  • Positive sentiment stemmed from bloggers who think this push for more personality will mark a return to the glory days of NASCAR. These fans think the sport has become too mechanical and sponsor driven, and hope the “back to basics” plan will breathe life back into the sport.
  • Negative sentiment came from bloggers who appreciated the way NASCAR was but are happy with the nature of the sport today.
