OH, CANADA: In Toronto, Chris Zelkovich writes ratings for Maple Leafs games are down 14% on the CBC, 10% on Rogers Sportsnet and about 1% on TSN. Meanwhile, the Raptors are up 51% on Rogers Sportsnet, up 28% on The Score and up 6% on TSN. Raptors NBA TV has seen its average audiences almost triple. Overall, ratings for the Raptors are up 34%, marking the second consecutive season of double-digit increases. MLSE Senior VP/Broadcasting Chris Hebb: "I have no doubt there are some fans who watch both teams and, because fans are fickle, some are moving to the Raptors." However, Zelkovich notes the Raptors are "still in the Canadian sports basement," as their 197,000 viewer average on CBC puts the team "in the same league as downhill skiing, although ahead of English soccer and darts.'' Even the Maple Leafs' lowest national viewer numbers -- 820,000 on TSN -- are "something the Raptors see only in their wildest dreams" (TORONTO STAR, 2/15).

START YOUR ENGINES: The February 9 Budweiser Shootout on Fox earned a 5.1/9 final Nielsen rating (8.5 million viewers), up 6.3% over last year's 4.8/9. Viewing of the race peaked at a 6.1/11 between 10:00-10:10pm ET as more than ten million viewers saw Dale Earnhardt Jr. win the race (Fox)….SPEED's February 9 NASCAR coverage saw double-digit ratings growth over comparable programming in '07. Coverage was led by NASCAR RaceDay, which earned a 1.53 coverage rating (1.1 million HHs), up 17% from a year ago. The ARCA/ReMax Series race earned a 1.46 coverage rating, up 16% from a 1.26 last year. Practice for the Daytona 500 delivered a 1.11 coverage rating (+8%), while two episodes of "NASCAR Live!" were up 18% and 26%, respectively (Speed).

NORTHERN EXPOSURE: FSN North received top ratings in the market for their coverage of "Hockey Day in Minnesota," including the second-highest rated Wild game (4.16 HH rating) and the highest-rated Wild pre-game (3.31 HH rating) of the season. With more than 16 hours of hockey-related programming, including five full games from three locations, more than 100 FSN North employees took part in the coverage, which lasted from 9:00am-1:00am CT (FSN North).
