New Eco-Friendly Jordan Shoe Part Of Bigger Nike Initiative

Several Players Will Be Sporting Air
Jordan XX3 During NBA All-Star Game
The new Air Jordan XX3 shoe, which was created with the "near absence of chemical-based glues and an outsole made of recylced material," will debut at this weekend's NBA All-Star Game in New Orleans, according to Nicholas Casey of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. For Nike, the XX3 is at the "forefront of a broader effort that is intended to please not just environmentalists and jocks but also Wall Street." The shoe is part of Nike's "Considered" program, which is a "broad plan to reduce greenhouse gases and trim factory inefficiency by making cleaner, more sustainable designs in Nike's own labs." Casey writes rather than "monitor the use of facial masks by overseas workers handling toxic chemicals, Nike is teaching itself to design shoes that don't use them." The movement "represents a systemic shake-up of the company that is supposed to result in manufacturing operations that are both carbon neutral and cheaper." Nike CEO Mark Parker: "It's right for the business." Nike VP/Innovation Design & Special Projects Tinker Hatfield, who has worked with Michael Jordan for two decades in designing his shoes, said that Jordan "had his doubts when presented with the plan." Hatfield: "The first words out of his mouth were, 'It better work right.'" Hatfield added that a "key challenge was to create a shoe that could withstand the rigors of the basketball court while reducing the use of chemical glues." The design team created the shoe's outsole, midsole and upper sections to "fit together like a jigsaw puzzle" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 2/15).
