Heading Down I-4 Again: Rays Moving Blue Jays Series To Orlando

Rays Moving Series With Blue
Jays To Disney Complex |
The Rays Thursday confirmed that the team will "move an April 22-24 series against Toronto from Tropicana Field to the Disney complex near Orlando," according to Marc Topkin of the ST. PETERSBURG TIMES. Rays President Matt Silverman: "For us to be as successful as we can be, we have to be a regional team. These games extend our region and help us make Orlando Rays territory." To facilitate the move, the Rays will be "compensating season-ticket holders and sponsors for having three fewer games than expected, and working a deal with the city" as the team did last year when it moved three games against the Rangers to the Disney complex. Tickets for the Disney games will be first available through an internet-only presale at Raysbaseball.com Friday before opening up to the team's usual sales outlets on Saturday (ST. PETERSBURG TIMES, 2/15). The three Orlando games last year between the Rays and Rangers drew a combined 26,917 fans for the series, including a sell-out crowd of 9,635 for the finale. Silverman noted the games drew an increase in TV ratings and drew Tampa-area fans (SARASOTA HERALD-TRIBUNE, 2/15).
GIVE THE DEVIL YOUR DUE: The Rays are leveling fines for people who "continue to refer to the club" as the "Devil Rays." The franchise shortened its name in November and has since "maintained 'Drop the Devil' donation boxes in its offices," which require employees to donate $1 to the Rays Baseball Foundation every time they use the term "Devil Rays" (SI, 2/18 issue).
