This Week's Newsmakers: NBA Scores Kudos For Service Projects
THE DAILY each Friday offers our take on the performances over the past week of people and entities in sports business. Here are this week’s newsmakers.
WIN: THE NBA AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY -- Yes, we are feeling a bit of “sports business lite” with this, but there is nothing wrong with using the power of sports to better society. That is exactly what the NBA is doing this weekend in New Orleans -- and especially today. Mobilizing thousands of volunteers for 10 service projects for the NBA Cares All-Star Day of Service is a model worth emulating for other properties and organizations. Good work.
LOSS: ROGER CLEMENS -- We’re not proclaiming any innocence or guilt here, but it was a rough week for the Rocket in going to Capitol Hill to restore his reputation. His performance before the Congressional committee was largely panned, and most are calling into question how prepared he was and whether his legal guidance was sound.
DRAW: ANDREA KREMER AND FRED GAUDELLI -- While we were not surprised by the remarks of Gaudelli, who has criticized ESPN in the past, more heads were turned by Kremer’s comments about the way ESPN handled the roles of MICHELE TAFOYA and SUZY KOLBER on “MNF.” While we admire outspokenness and leadership in speaking out for collegues -- and especially Kremer for being a lecolleaguesading voice for women in sports -- the remarks by both must have taken Bristol by surprise considering how some execs there obviously took an interest in helping their careers.
