Blazers Consider Redeveloping Rose Quarter, Razing Coliseum

Trail Blazers Considering Idea
Of Redeveloping Rose Quarter
The Trail Blazers are "again floating the idea of redeveloping the Rose Quarter, even testing the idea of retrofitting or razing nearby Memorial Coliseum," according to Hunsberger & Frank of the Portland OREGONIAN. While team officials are not discussing specific proposals, they acknowledged that the city-owned Coliseum and nearby land controlled by Trail Blazers Owner Paul Allen "could be targeted for new development." The team is "marketing its redevelopment plans as part of its attempt to sell naming rights to the 13-year-old Rose Garden," but Trail Blazers Senior VP/Sales & Marketing Sarah Mensah said the team wants a corporation "hopefully interested and engaged in not just putting their name on the Rose Garden but on the whole Rose Quarter." Hunsberger & Frank note any development is "probably several years off and politically tricky," as the city "would have to approve any Coliseum redevelopment." Meanwhile, military veterans "have bristled in the past at talk of tearing down the arena." Portland City Commissioner Randy Leonard this week said that he "could support razing the Coliseum as long as another appropriate veterans' memorial was erected on the site" (Portland OREGONIAN, 2/13).

ATTENDANCE: The Portland OREGONIAN reported the Trail Blazers have sold out 17 of 26 home games this season with an average attendance of 19,100, ninth in the league, and a 21% increase over the '06-07 season. Mensah said that the club still has not "met their goal for selling corporate suites," noting the team sold only ten of 66 suite contracts this season. Meanwhile, Trail Blazers COO Mike Golub said that ticket prices on average will increase 5% next season (OREGONIAN, 2/12). Blazers officials hope to "take advantage of the team's playoff run to sell season tickets for next year" by launching the annual drive to recruit season ticket-holders "more than a month early." The team will offer buyers access to '08 playoff tickets as of March 1 (OREGONLIVE.com, 2/13).
