Clemens Memorabilia Value Down Since Mitchell Report Release

Value Of Clemens' Memorabilia Takes
Hit Since Release Of Mitchell Report
The Mitchell Report “not only has rocked the baseball world, but has rippled through the sport’s memorabilia market, quickly devaluing collectibles of some of its biggest names,” according to Tom Johnson of the Newark STAR-LEDGER. Tuff Stuff Editor Scott Kelnohofer said that collectibles of free agent P Roger Clemens "have taken the biggest hit" among players cited in the report. New Jersey-based JT Sports memorabilia store Owner John Taube estimated that Clemens collectibles "have declined anywhere from [30-50%]." Taube: "Without question, the memorabilia market has taken a sizable hit as far as value goes." Sports Page Owner Darrell Giordano, who previously had "no trouble" selling Clemens' '85 Topps rookie card, said he has not sold one since the release of the Mitchell Report. New Jersey-based Bob Beck Collectibles Owner Bob Beck said, "I would never purchase Clemens stuff anymore. It's almost like a penny stock" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 2/13). On Long Island, Jonathan Starkey notes local sports memorabilia dealers and collectors -- "who have a significant financial stake in the outcome of the ongoing saga -- are anxious" about Clemens' testimony before the U.S. House Committee on Oversight & Government Reform today. New York-based Cardboard Memories Owner Scott Stimell said, "It can't be good news if anything negative comes out. The majority of people won't buy his memorabilia." Memorabilia collector Jeff Nichol said: "I won't touch Clemens, I won't touch [free agent LF Barry] Bonds. I won't touch [Yankees P Andy] Pettitte" (NEWSDAY, 2/13).
