Nationals Park, which will open with the March 29 Orioles-Nationals exhibition game, is “more bland than Camden Yards but more intimate, with an open-air feel and views of the U.S. Capitol dome from portions of the upper deck,” according to Jeff Barker of the Baltimore SUN, who toured the park with other members of the media yesterday. The “intimacy is evident in the views from beyond center field. Even in those seats, home plate doesn’t appear distant.” The stadium’s “modest size is among its most striking features,” as the first row of the lower bowl is “16 feet closer to the field than its counterpart” at RFK Stadium. Also, the new oval-shaped home clubhouse, featuring dark-cherry wood, “appears to be four to five times larger than the locker room at RFK” (Baltimore SUN, 2/5). MLB.com’s Michael Phillips noted the ballpark includes a “Strike Zone” kids’ area and a series of shops, including a “Build-A-Prez,” operated by the Build-A-Bear company that will allow kids to “construct their own racing president.” Nationals President Stan Kasten said that “between six and eight local vendors will offer food service, though he declined to name them until the lineup is finalized.” A restaurant in center field will be open to all fans, though it "will include special seats for season-ticket holders.” Meanwhile, in the President’s Level club seats, fans will be able to watch indoor batting practice and post-game press conferences. Several upstairs suites "will be sold as party rooms on a game-by-game basis” (MLB.com, 2/4).
