Jeter Reportedly Cuts Deal With
Dept. Of Taxation To End Probe
In N.Y., Mahoney & Feiden report Yankees SS DEREK JETER has "cut a secret deal" with the New York Department of Taxation to "end a probe into whether he paid enough income taxes." Government officials last year "mulled a civil case" against Jeter after he claimed his legal home was in Florida, which has no income tax. Tax investigators in November questioned whether Jeter had "dodged city and state taxes and interest" from '01-03. The out-of-court settlement "sheds no light on whether Jeter admitted to improperly filing returns" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 2/5).

NAMES: Cavaliers F LEBRON JAMES yesterday pleaded no contest to a speeding charge and paid $259 to settle a ticket he received on December 30 for allegedly driving 101 mph on a stretch of I-71 in Ohio with a 65 mph speed limit (OHIO.com, 2/4)....Univ. of North Carolina men's basketball coach and Basketball HOFer ROY WILLIAMS will be inducted into the North Carolina Sports HOF at a spring banquet in Raleigh. Other honorees include former Duke AD TOM BUTTERS and former NASCAR driver and team Owner RICHARD CHILDRESS (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 2/5).... Dodgers Broadcaster RICK MONDAY yesterday was inducted into the Southern California Sports Broadcasters HOF at Lakeside Golf Club (Dodgers)....UFC fighter CHUCK LIDDELL has co-authored a 320-page book, entitled "My Fighting Life." Fighter TITO ORTIZ' book, "This Is Gonna Hurt," is due out later this year (CALGARY SUN, 2/2).
