MLS Rejects Latest Transfer Offer For Revolution's Twellman

MLS Rejects Preston North End's
$3M Transfer Offer For Twellman
MLS has rejected "another transfer offer" for Revolution F Taylor Twellman from English club Preston North End, this time for $3M, according to Frank Dell'Apa of the BOSTON GLOBE. Preston, which plays in England's second-tier Coca-Cola Football League Championship, previously offered $2.5M for Twellman. The $3M "would have been the fourth-highest transfer fee in MLS history and, with incentives, could have equaled the second-highest transfer fee" at $3.5M (BOSTON GLOBE, 1/31). In a special to ESPNSOCCERNET.com, Dell'Apa wrote MLS has earned more than $30M in transfer fees since its inaugural season in '96, but the deals "have been done in spite of the league's built-in resistance to the idea." It generally is "not in the MLS teams' interest to transfer a player," as the Revolution "could not afford to lose Twellman from a competitive viewpoint." The club would receive two-thirds of a transfer fee, with MLS taking the remaining portion, but only $500,000 of that amount could be used for an allocated player, making it "very difficult to find a replacement of equal value to Twellman" (ESPNSOCCERNET.com, 1/30).

FAIR DEAL: English Women’s Premier League club Chelsea today will announce it has signed former U.S. women’s national team MF Lorrie Fair to a six-month contract, the first U.S. player to ever sign with the team (Chelsea FC).
