Super Bowl XLII Most Credentialed In Game's History

Super Bowl XLII is the “most credentialed Super Bowl in history,” as the NFL issued 4,786 credentials for Sunday's game compared with 4,516 in ’07, according to Neil Best of NEWSDAY. NFL Dir of Media Relations Michael Signora said that there is a “perfect storm of attention and interest.” Other than Fox, which will broadcast the game, the media outlet with the most reps attending is the host Arizona Republic with 57, followed by the Boston Globe with 35. Best notes the league reserves “more than 1,000 rooms for media and usually has some left over that it can return to the hotels. Not this time.” Signora: “We were way, way tighter on hotel rooms than we’ve been in the past” (NEWSDAY, 1/29).  NFL VP/Corporate Communications Brian McCarthy added that "more online credentials are being issued than ever before, but had no exact count."  McCarthy noted that the increase was "indicated, in part, by the fact that the Pro Football Writers of America are now headed by a Web writer," FoxSports.com's Alex Marvez, who previously wrote for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel (EDITOR & PUBLISHER, 1/28).

TEMPTING FATE: The Boston Globe is "jumping the Super Bowl gun,'' promoting a new book called, "19-0: The Historic Championship Season of New England's Patriots,'' a paperback available for preorder on Amazon.com for $14.95 (BOSTON HERALD, 1/29).

COUNTER PROGRAMMING: BROADCASTING & CABLE’s Anne Becker notes Oxygen will air “Deion and Pilar: Primetime Love” featuring Deion Sanders and his wife during halftime of the Super Bowl, while Lifetime will run a “Football-Free Movie Extravaganza” on its main channel and Lifetime Movie Network during the game, and Animal Planet will air its fourth-annual “Puppy Bowl,” a marathon of dog shows. Becker writes the broadcast nets “don’t seem to be trying as hard.” NBC has slated a “Biggest Loser” marathon; ABC scheduled “Meet the Fockers” and CBS slated reruns of “Shark” and “Cold Case” (BROADCASTING & CABLE, 1/28 issue).

GETTING DRESSED: Lingerie Bowl promoters acknowledged that "there will be no Super Bowl halftime special this year featuring scantily clad female football players." Horizon Productions "targeted Scottsdale as its destination of choice during an over-the-top press conference" held at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix in February '07. While Scottsdale "never formally rejected the plans to close city streets for a festival or play the game at a downtown golf course, it was obvious the Lingerie Bowl was not being welcomed with open arms." The '07 Lingerie Bowl was also canceled, which promoters said was "because of the upcoming switch" from PPV to cable, but the promoters "could never say who the cable station was that would be broadcasting" the '08 game (EAST VALLEY TRIBUNE, 1/29).
