Santa Clara Council Votes To Proceed With 49ers Stadium Plan

Jed York Confident 49ers, Santa
Clara Can Bridge Funding Gap
The Santa Clara City Council last night voted 6-1 to allow the city to begin negotiations with the 49ers on building a new stadium near the Great America theme park, and several council members said that the plan "should ultimately be decided by voters, probably in June or November," according to John Cote of the S.F. CHRONICLE. The City Council is scheduled at next Tuesday's meeting to "consider placing an initiative on the ballot." Santa Clara Mayor Patricia Mahan said, "It's kind of like getting the engagement ring. It doesn't mean the deal's done." Cote notes there is a $51M gap between "what the city says it can pay and what the [49ers] would like it to contribute," but 49ers Special Projects Manager Jed York, the son of team co-Owners John & Denise DeBartolo York, said, "We are confident that we can bridge that gap and that we can overcome any challenges that the city of Santa Clara has raised." York: "The most resounding message that I've heard is that Santa Clara residents want to see the stadium go forward." Cedar Fair, which owns Great America, has said that it would "go along with a plan only in exchange for major financial concessions" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 1/16). In San Jose, Mike Swift notes city and team officials this morning are scheduled to begin negotiations toward a "term sheet" that would "set out all the terms for a binding agreement" that would be on the ballot later this year. One "key effect of a 'yes' vote [by city voters] is that it would start the state-mandated environmental review process, a time-consuming step that must be complete before construction could begin" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 1/16).
