Azinger Part Of Group Petitioning To
Rescind PGA Tour's New Cut Rule |
At least seven players signed a petition at last week's PGA Tour Sony Open, asking for the new cut rule -- which stipulates that if the number of golfers advancing to the final 36 holes exceeds 78, the number will be sliced back to 70 -- "to be rescinded." U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Paul Azinger, who was among the signees, said, "I think the tour should change the rule immediately. This has an impact on the Ryder Cup (selection process) and an impact on the FedEx Cup. They're going to pay you not to play. I think that's awful" (DETROIT NEWS, 1/16)....Statistics released Tuesday by the NTRA and Equibase show that despite a decline in race days in '07, overall purses "increased 5.5% and handle remained steady compared to '06 figures." Total U.S. purses increased from $1.12B in '06 to $1.18B in '07. Race days were down 0.82% from '06 to 6,168; and wagering was down 0.37% to $14.73B on U.S. from the previous year (THOROUGHBREDTIMES.com, 1/15)....The WNBA yesterday was for the first time "affected by the fact that the CBA, which expired in the fall, is still not ratified." Teams were supposed to be able to begin talking to players about resigning or signing as free agents, but the date has been "pushed back indefinitely" until an agreement between the league and players' union is reached (Tacoma NEWS-TRIBUNE, 1/16).
