UFC Files Suit Against Heavyweight Champion Couture

UFC Files Lawsuit
Against Randy Couture |
Lawyers for UFC parent company Zuffa, LLC yesterday "filed suit in Clark County District Court, alleging chiefly that [heavyweight champion Randy Couture's] comments about the UFC and its senior management caused the business irreparable damage and that he is in breach of the contract" he signed with the organization in December '06, according to Adam Hill of the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL. UFC President Dana White said that he and Couture "have been friends for a very long time. The hard part is that he is not living up to his obligations." Hill notes the lawsuit "seeks damages in excess of $10,000," as well as "an injunction restraining Couture from participating in any way in any promotion competing against the UFC." The suit also claims that Couture's "negative statements about the company constituted 'injurious falsehood and trade disparagement,' that has led to significant financial losses for the UFC." It "alleges conspiracy, stating that several unnamed parties to be identified at a later date worked with Couture to intentionally inflict harm on the UFC" and that Couture is in breach of a stipulation prohibiting him from "engaging in 'direct or indirect competition' with the UFC" for 12 months after his contract ended. Couture's sponsorship and promotion of IFL team Xtreme Couture "would be in direct violation of the stipulation" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 1/15).
