Hornets Continue Searching For Practice Facility Solution

Hornets To Continue To Explore
Options For Long-Term Practice Facility
Hornets President of Business Operations Hugh Weber said that the team will  "continue to explore options for a long-term alternative to the Alario Center" in the wake of the team's lease extension with the state of Louisiana that released the state from its obligation to build a new practice facility, according to Teddy Kider of the New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE. There are "no new plans to fund or construct a state-of-the-art (practice) facility, but members of the Hornets' organization continue to refer to the Alario Center as a short-term solution."  Hornets GM Jeff Bower: "It's something that we're comfortable with as a temporary facility. We still understand the importance of having a permanent state-of-the-art facility." Kider notes the Alario Center is currently undergoing an $8.5M expansion, a project that is scheduled to be completed in late May or early June and is "not being funded by the team."  Alario Center GM Greg Guthrie said that the 30,000-square-foot expansion will include "room for two regulation-size NBA courts" and new locker rooms. SMG Regional VP Doug Thornton, whose company manages New Orleans Arena, said that one of the state's priorities in signing the extension Wednesday was "relieving itself of the responsibility to fund a (practice) facility." He said that such a facility is "not the best investment considering the amount of time remaining on the lease." Thornton added that the state "has agreed to provide $1.5[M] in design costs if the Hornets decide to build a new facility or add further expansions to the Alario Center" (New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE, 1/11).
