Blog Hound: Kelly Tilghman Suspended

Bloggers debate the appropriateness of Golf Channel's decision to suspend announcer Kelly Tilghman for two weeks after she joked about Tiger Woods in a January 4 telecast that other young golfers should "lynch him in a back alley."

The Influence Peddler

“Two weeks -- probably appropriate for an inadvertent poor choice of words -- especially when Woods himself vouches for her.”

“Golf Channel’s apparently afraid Tilghman might give them the Imus touch. Better safe than sorry!”

“When the Golf Channel first announced their plans to do nothing, I was disappointed. Although I didn't think that Tilghman should be fired, I felt that a suspension would be sufficient.”
Hollywood Gossip

“She shouldn’t be fired for making a racist remark, she should be fired for being too stupid to understand that she shouldn’t make a racist statement in public.”
Media Outrage

I think she should not have been suspended. I think Tiger knows it wasn’t meant as a racist comment.

BUILDING THE BUZZ: Sports Media Challenge's Buzz Manager analyzed the online buzz related to Tilghman's suspension. Bloggers who felt the network acted appropriately were tallied positive, making up 35.29% of relevant posts. Bloggers who took objection to the timing and/or severity of the punishment were counted negative at 47.06%, while 17.65% were neutral. Click here for more info. • The topic ranked 7 of 10 on The Buzz, indicating a high level of interest.
  • Positive sentiment stemmed from bloggers who agreed with a two-week suspension and who felt that despite the egregious nature of the comments, Woods’ support for Tilghman should be enough to save her job.
  • Negative sentiment came either from bloggers who sided with Al Sharpton and argued Tilghman deserved immediate termination, or from those who felt the incident didn’t warrant a punishment at all.
