Privacy Please: No Mics, Cameras In Suns-Jazz Locker Rooms

Microphones To Be Excluded From
Locker Rooms For TNT's Suns-Jazz Game
Following an incident in which microphones captured Jazz coach Jerry Sloan dropping an F-bomb during halftime of ESPN's December 12 broadcast of Jazz-Suns, there will be “no cameras or microphones in either the home locker room or the visitor’s locker room at EnergySolutions Arena” for tonight’s TNT broadcast of Suns-Jazz, according to sources cited by Tim Buckley of the Deseret News.  The Jazz “wouldn’t say if the locker room exclusion is a direct result of lobbying by the franchise for the league to make up for its error [regarding Sloan], or if it’s mere coincidence.” NBA VP/Basketball Communications Tim Frank indicated that “league officials have been working with the NBA Coaches Association on the issue of TV access” and that “one result of those discussions … is a cutback in the number of times cameras and microphones will be imbedded in locker rooms.” Sloan “sounded less than appeased.” When asked if he “felt any better,” Sloan said, “No.” But Sloan said that if the NBA “demands that he wear the microphone during play ... he will abide by the orders” (DESERET NEWS, 1/10). Frank said of the additional access being provided in nationally-broadcast games this season, “It’s good for us. But at the same time, we don’t want to inhibit coaches. We want to come to a place that is comfortable for everybody” (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 1/10).
