Dykstra Helps Produce Financial Support Magazine For Athletes

Former MLBer Lenny Dykstra has partnered with Doubledown Media to produce The Players Club, "a magazine aimed at helping players manage their millions," according to Ken Belson of the N.Y. TIMES. The monthly magazine, which debuts in April, will "be given free to 20,000 athletes worldwide who play in 10 sports." Agents, team execs and financial advisers will also receive the magazine.  The magazine will include "success stories from retired players, advice for spouses and articles on financial topics like how to set up an annuity." Dykstra, who thus far has invested $3M in the magazine, "has recruited other well-known athletes to serve as editorial advisers," including former MLBer Ron Darling, former NFLer Tim Brown and Coyotes Managing Partner and coach Wayne Gretzky.  The magazine "is not the first of its kind," but the "subsidizing sponsors of The Players Club, with their status as preferred providers of services, could enjoy a competitive advantage over stockbrokers, time-share jet providers and others who would be able to advertise their products in the magazine" (N.Y. TIMES, 12/17).
