USATF Awards Eugene Olympic Trials, U.S. Championships

Univ. Of Oregon's Hayward Field To
Host Several Upcoming USATF Events |
USA Track & Field (USATF) yesterday awarded Eugene, Oregon the 2012 Olympic Trials for track & field as well as the '09 and 2011 U.S. Championships, all to be held at the Univ. of Oregon's Hayward Field, according to Ken Goe of the Portland OREGONIAN. Finances of the deal were not disclosed; Eugene has already been awarded the June 27-July 6 '08 Olympic trials and the 2010 NCAA Division 1 Championships. USATF often "uses a bidding system to select sites for its championship meets," however this time Eugene "presented a proposal with enough advantages to convince the organization to bypass the bid process." USATF CEO Craig Masback said, "We've encouraged cities to bid for multiple years so we can create locations where there is a deep reservoir of experience in hosting our events. Then, we're not re-inventing the wheel every year." Previously, Sacramento hosted the Olympic Trials in '00 and '04, and Indianapolis hosted the U.S. Championships in both '06 and '07. Masback said, "It seems to work much better when we're not having to spend time getting on the same page about organizational details and issues" (Portland OREGONIAN, 12/13).
