Sign And Drive: A's Could Acquire Bonds Despite Troubles

Many Feel A's Are Team
Likely To Sign Bonds To Deal
The A’s are “considered the hot pick to sign [Barry Bonds] despite his legal troubles and the potential public-relations issues that accompany him," according to Susan Slusser of the S.F. CHRONICLE.  Bonds is scheduled for arraignment Friday in S.F. on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. An MLB exec said, “There is no doubt in my mind that Oakland will sign Bonds. I’d be shocked if it didn’t happen.” Multiple sources said that the A’s “were working on a deal to sign Bonds last month before he was indicted.” Slusser notes, “Any time off needed to take care of court proceedings would be factored into the deal, and it would be null and void in the event of a conviction during the life of the contract.” A’s GM Billy Beane “usually has a free hand when it comes to personnel decisions and he has long been a fan” of Bonds.  A source indicated that “two other teams also have expressed interest" in Bonds.  While many believe Bonds would sign with an AL team so he can serve as a DH, Bonds’ agent, Jeff Borris, said, “I’m speaking with [AL clubs] as well as [NL] clubs” (S.F. CHRONICLE, 12/7).

GUILLEN: MLB Thursday issued 15-day suspensions to Royals LF Jose Guillen and Orioles LF Jay Gibbons for violating the league's drug policy. Both were spared the 50-game suspensions mandated by the current policy because their violations took place under older MLB regulations. Guillen this week signed a three-year, $36M contract with the Royals (Mult.). A Royals fan attending a private season-ticket holders event Thursday night read to the group a letter Royals GM Dayton Moore "had written about how the Royals would be made up of good guys whom fans could feel good cheering for.  How, the man wondered, could Moore write that and then sign Guillen?" (K.C. STAR, 12/7).  Moore: "We anticipated a possible suspension. We were comfortable with what the suspension would be because that's what the former (drug) policy said. We focused on signing Jose Guillen to hit in the middle of the lineup, not something that might have happened in '05. We made a decision to move forward" (USA TODAY, 12/7).
