Hawaii Poised To Gain Financially From Sugar Bowl Appearance

Hawaii Likely To Earn About
$4.5M For Sugar Bowl Appearance
The Univ. of Hawaii stands to receive roughly $4.5M for playing in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day against the Univ. of Georgia, and UH coach June Jones said that the “increased funding takes the team’s recruiting plateau, previous limited to $50,000, up a notch,” according to Brian McInnis of the HONOLULU STAR-BULLETIN. Jones said, “The identity, what’s happened to us and how we do it, it’s a little different. We haven’t even made trips to the mainland to recruit because of the money situation. … It brings us into a new arena.” Jones also said jokingly, “Hopefully, it means we’ll get some new carpet and new stuff in my office” (HONOLULU STAR-BULLETIN, 12/3).

TRAVEL PACKAGES GOING FAST: In Honolulu, Rosemarie Bernardo reported travel packages from Hawaii to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl range from $2,000-3,500, and travel agencies said that they “were going quickly.” Boyd Gaming Corp. spokesperson Rob Stillwell said that the company's Vacations-Hawaii division sold 100 packages in ten minutes at $1,999, which covers airfare, game tickets and lodging. Panda Travel Special Projects Manager Kehau Amorin said that the company sold out of over 150 packages at $2,600 each that also included ground transportation. Bernardo noted Hawaiian Airlines is looking into chartering an aircraft to New Orleans, and Boyd Gaming is “looking at creating charter flights from Las Vegas to Louisiana, where it owns some casinos” (HONOLULU STAR-BULLETIN, 12/4).
