CFB Coaches' Salaries Reaches $1M Average For First Time
 |
Miles Expected To Surpass $3M In Annual
Salary With New Contract Extension |
The average salary for the 120 “major-college football coaches hit $1[M]” for the first time this year, not including benefits, perks and bonuses, according to a front-page Cover Story by Wieberg & Upton of USA TODAY. LSU coach Les Miles’ contract extension through 2012, expected to be approved this week, figures to be worth $3M annually; Alabama’s Nick Saban, Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops, Florida’s Urban Meyer and Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz also have deals worth over $3M year. Last season, Stoops was the “only one making more than $3[M].” At least “50 coaches are making seven figures, eight more than a year ago,” and “at least a dozen are making $2[M] or more, up from nine” in ’06. According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, the median total compensation for 182 Presidents and Chancellors of public research universities and university systems was “a little more than $397,000 annually.” LSU Chancellor Sean O’Keefe said, “Is this a favorable trend? ... Of course not. That said, it’s also market dynamics. The value of things is determined by the demand that exists. There’s nothing unfair about that.” NCAA President Myles Brand “considers escalating coaches’ salaries an important issue ‘but in a subtle way.’” He “points to a ‘coattail effect’ they may be having in raising spending throughout athletics departments -- on assistant coaches, [ADs] and other personnel.” Also, because of its "inability to legally suppress salaries,” the NCAA is “building an extensive database of spending on salaries and other athletics line items. When it’s completed early next year, schools will be able to draw comparisons with groups of institutions similar in size, conference affiliations and even ambition” (USA TODAY, 12/5).

Brooks' Contract With Kentucky Includes
Number Of On-Field, Off-Field Incentives |
INCENTIVES: USA TODAY’s McCarthy & Bohn note Kentucky football coach Rich Brooks earns a $50,000 bonus "if he wins at least five games against [SEC] teams. He also gets a piece of the action if Kentucky’s gross ticket revenue exceeds the prior season’s.” The inclusion of such “potentially lucrative short-term goals is increasing.” Agent Neil Cornrich, who represents college coaches, said, “Isn’t this what stock options are all about?” Western Michigan AD Kathy Beauregard noted having incentives is the “only way we can afford” paying coaches (USA TODAY, 12/5).
PENN STATE GIFT: Penn State is receiving $5M to endow football coach Joe Paterno’s salary. The endowment, from Patrick and Candace Malloy, was announced five days after Paterno’s $512,664 was revealed following a lengthy legal challenge by the university (Mult., 12/5).
