Dynamo, Galaxy Among Four Teams To
Compete In Pan-Pacific Championship |
MLS' Dynamo and Galaxy will join Japan's J League champion Gamba Osaka and a team from Australia's A-League in the Pan-Pacific Championship at Aloha Stadium in Hawaii, a new four-team tournament to be held February 20-23, according to Kyle Sakamoto of the HONOLULU ADVERTISER. Dynamo F Brian Ching is a native of Hawaii. MLS Senior VP/Int'l & Business Operations Nelson Rodriguez: "We believe it will be the most significant soccer event to come to Hawai'i, and perhaps the greatest international event to come to Hawai'i in at least the last 25 years." The MLS and J League are both in the offseason in February, but the A-League will be in the middle of its playoffs. Rodriguez said that "the highest-ranking [A-League] team that doesn't advance to the grand final series" will participate in the Pan-Pacific. Rodriguez added he hopes the tournament will be "ongoing and annual." The football lines on the FieldTurf at Aloha Stadium "will be erased and soccer markings will be painted in" (HONOLULU ADVERTISER, 11/30). Soccer United Marketing said that the event will be broadcast on "several television networks to be announced soon" (USA TODAY, 11/30).
