A-Rod's Yankees Contract Receives Approval From MLB, Union

MLB, MLBPA Approve
Yankees' Deal With Rodriguez
MLB Commissioner Bud Selig’s office and the MLBPA have approved the non-guaranteed portion of Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez’ new ten-year, $275M-plus contract, according to Murray Chass of the N.Y TIMES. As part of the deal, Rodriguez will “share in revenue the Yankees generate by marketing his home run milestones.” Rodriguez, who has hit 518 career home runs, will receive $6M when he ties Willie Mays’ 660 home run mark, Babe Ruth’s 714, Hank Aaron’s 755 and Barry Bonds’ 762, as well as when he breaks the record. He will also get “marketing money in exchange for making certain appearances linked to his home run milestones over and above what players are required by their contracts to do.” The Yankees and Rodriguez “had to keep changing the nature of the agreement to gain approval because players cannot receive bonuses for achievements like home run totals” (N.Y. TIMES, 11/25). With MLB and the MLBPA approving the contract, the deal could be “finalized by early this week.” The contract would be the richest in MLB history (NYDAILYNEWS.com, 11/25).

THE HEIR APPARENT: In a Q&A with the N.Y. POST’s Steve Serby, Yankees Senior VP Hank Steinbrenner said, “I don’t want to compare myself with my dad. The fact is, I’m a much easier Boss; I’m very slow to fire somebody. It would have to be for a very good reason -- if they cross me or the company. Once I fire them, they stay fired. … Someone once said … I tend to shoot from the hip like my dad. I’ll analyze things as well, just like he did at times. You don’t get to be as successful as he’s been without analyzing things. He was always thinking.” Steinbrenner added, “The Yankees are the Yankees -- no football team, or any other baseball team, compares. I haven’t been anywhere in this country where I haven’t seen Yankee hats, Yankee license plates all over the place. It never ceases to amaze me how many Yankee fans there are nationwide” (N.Y. POST, 11/25). In N.Y., Bob Raissman wrote when writers call, Steinbrenner “picks up or returns the call. When he talks, the man usually puts plenty of meat on his quotes.” But Orioles Senior VP/Baseball Operations Jim Duquette said that Steinbrenner’s “loose lips are ‘a disaster’” for Yankees GM Brian Cashman. During a recent appearance on SNY’s “Daily News Live,” Duquette said Steinbrenner “tells everyone their plans before they do it. And it costs (the Yankees) a ton of money. And it’s going to cost them down the road” (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 11/25).
