Charity Stripe: First Tee's Barrow Outlines Plans

The First Tee Exec Dir Joe Louis Barrow Jr. held his first “State of The Tee” address in Jacksonville during the organization’s annual meeting on Monday. Barrow said that the growth of The First Tee chapters and facilities “will moderate over the next five years, with goals of 235 chapters and 300 facilities by 2010.” He said that the “focus of growth will be on The First Tee’s National School Program, which incorporates golf into the physical education programs of elementary schools.” Barrow added that the organization is “financially healthy, thanks to corporate sponsors such as Wal-Mart and charity money directed to the organization though the PGA Tour.” The First Tee, a non-profit, took in $59.4M in revenue in ’06, with $55.6M in expense, for a net gain of $3.8M (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 11/6).

Phelps (l) Promotes Hilton Swim To Beijing Promo
NOTES: U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps appeared on CSN’s “Washington Post Live” Monday and promoted his involvement with the Hilton Swim To Beijing program. Phelps: “Hilton will donate about $100,000 (in each of five cities the program will visit) to help promote the sport of swimming and raise the awareness and get more kids involved.” Phelps was wearing a sweatshirt that was strategically opened to show the Hilton logo on his golf shirt  (“Washington Post Live,” CSN, 11/5)....Chargers LB Shawne Merriman is serving as spokesperson for Burlington Coat Factory’s national drive to distribute donated new or used coats through the Salvation Army and other charities (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 11/6).
