NHL Franchise Notes: Penguins Get More Tickets For Outdoor Game

In Pittsburgh, Shelly Anderson notes the Penguins have received 2,200 more tickets from the NHL’s allotment for the January 1 Amp Energy Winter Classic outdoor game in Buffalo. The tickets will be sold to season-ticket holders.  About 1,200 range from $29-90, while the rest are obstructed-view seats that sell for $10. Some fans were upset that the 42,000 tickets available --  including 1,500 reserved for Penguins season-ticket holders -- sold out in less than 30 minutes in September, so the Penguins “asked the league for more” (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 11/7). Season-ticket holders wishing to buy tickets to the game must enter into a lottery by November 16, with winners being notified on November 19. A single request for two tickets can be made per account (Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 11/7).

BLUES: SI.com’s Michael Farber wrote the Blues have “taken advantage of an opening in the St. Louis fan base left by the tumbling Cardinals and feckless Rams to reposition [themselves] in the market.” The team was “overshadowed by the Cardinals’ new stadium and their trip to the World Series” last year.  The Blues are 7-6-0, and 12,222 attended Coyotes-Blues on October 30 at the 21,000-seat Scottrade Center. However, Blues President & GM John Davidson said, “Last year, on a Tuesday in October against Phoenix, we probably would have had six (thousand).” Meanwhile, revenue from tickets sold has “already surpassed the ticket revenue from all of 2006-07” (SI.com, 11/6).

NOTES: The Capitals have partnered with George Washington Univ.’s graduate sports marketing class to market the Caps Student Rush, which allows college students to buy discounted tickets on game days. The students, who will plan and execute a marketing plan, will be divided into six groups and each will be assigned a local college in the DC area (Capitals)....Since the Xcel Energy Center opened in ’00, the Wild have sold out 282 consecutive home games including exhibition and playoff games (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 11/1).
