Pimlico Limits Fans Bringing Outside Alcohol To Preakness

Outside Beer No Longer Allowed In Clubhouse
Or Grandstand At Pimlico
Pimlico Race Course with next year’s Preakness is “ending a long-standing tradition” of allowing fans to bring alcohol bought outside the track into the grandstand and clubhouse areas of the track, according to Brent Jones of the Baltimore SUN. Maryland Jockey Club (MJC) officials said they “aren't considering any changes” to the policy allowing spectators to bring beer cans into the infield, and fans can still bring food from outside the track.  MJC VP/Communication Mike Gathagan said that the change “would bring the Preakness' alcohol policy in line with the other Triple Crown races, the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes.” But Jones notes that "no outside alcohol is allowed at Churchill Downs and Belmont Park, including the infield areas.” The Preakness usually draws about 90,000 spectators in the infield alone.  Charles Bailey, a frequent Preakness attendee, believes that forcing people to buy beer at the track “will probably cut into some people's wagering.”  But DC Sports & Sponsorship Sales President David Cope said that even if the policy change causes some not to pay the $75 to $135 for reserved seating in the grandstand or the clubhouse, Pimlico owner-operator Magna Entertainment Corp “should make up the money in increased alcohol sales.” Cope: "If they were prohibiting bringing (alcohol) in the infield, that would drastically affect their attendance in a negative" (Baltimore SUN, 11/7).
