Shot In The Arm: Active MLB Player To Meet With Mitchell
An active MLB player has "volunteered to speak" in the coming weeks with steroid investigator George Mitchell, "ending the wall of silence Mitchell had encountered in trying to get active players to cooperate without the leverage of subpoena power," according to a source cited by Tom Verducci of SI.com. The source "described the player as one of several players Mitchell wanted to question because of their previous public comments opposing steroid use, not because the player was connected to any steroid use of his own." Yankees DH Jason Giambi so far is the only active player to have met with Mitchell (SI.com, 11/6).

Matthews Jr. Scheduled To Meet With MLB
Officials Today Regarding HGH Report |
MORE MEETINGS: In L.A., Bill Shaikin reports Angels CF Gary Matthews Jr. today is scheduled to meet with MLB officials in N.Y. about his alleged ordering of HGH. It is "uncertain whether Matthews will be asked simply about the February SI.com report that alleged he was sent a shipment of HGH in 2004 or whether baseball officials have obtained documents that substantiate his involvement with HGH" (L.A. TIMES, 11/7). In S.F., Fainaru-Wada & Williams cite an MLB source who said that Mariners RF Jose Guillen "is expected to be interviewed" by Selig's office about his "purchase of $19,000 worth of performance-enhancing drugs over a three-year period" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 11/7). With Guillen, Matt Williams and Ismael Valdez all named in a S.F. Chronicle report yesterday as recipients of HGH, MLB Senior VP/PR Rich Levin yesterday said that MLB "would look into the most recent disclosure" (N.Y. TIMES, 11/7).
