Chargers Moving To Arizona Due To Wildfires In San Diego

Qualcomm Stadium Being Utilized
As Wildfire Evacuation Site
The Chargers “are going to move their organization to Phoenix" due to potentially hazardous air quality stemming from wildfires burning in Southern California, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.  The Chargers have 50 players and employees who have evacuated their homes. The team "will move to the (Cardinals) facility to practice all week. They still don’t know where the game on Sunday will be played against the (Texans) because Qualcomm Stadium may in fact be an evacuation site.” Arizona State’s Sun Devil Stadium could be the site of the game (“SportsCenter,” ESPN, 10/22).  Sun Devil Stadium hosted a '03 Dolphins-Chargers "MNF" game that was moved due to wildfires (THE DAILY). The Chargers said it was “too soon to determine” where Sunday's game will be played. In San Diego, Acee & Posner noted the Cardinals have a bye this week, but Univ. of Phoenix Stadium is hosting a motorcycle show this weekend. It is “possible the game could be rescheduled to Monday” (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 10/23). Chargers QB Philip Rivers said, “The truth of the matter is we do have a game Sunday, who knows where, and we’ve got to get ready for that” (AP, 10/22). Cardinals President Michael Bidwill said, “We have been in conversations with the league and the Chargers most of the day and have let them know that we will do whatever we need to accommodate their team in terms of practicing, using our training facility and preparing for their game this weekend” (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 10/23). Qualcomm Stadium and Del Mar Fairgrounds have been used as evacuation zones. About 4,000 people gathered at Qualcomm for food, blankets and beverages yesterday, while 2,000 people fled to Del Mar (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 10/23).
