Czech Company's Bid To Bring Rangers To Prague Comes Up Short

Ceska Sportovni Eyeing Rangers,
Jagr For Games In Prague Next Season
The cost of about $2M for Ceska Sportovni to buy out one of the NHL Rangers' home games and bring the team to Prague for games in '08-09 "is higher than that for any team in the NHL other than Toronto," and Ceska's initial bid was not high enough, according to John Dellapina of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. When Ceska's initial bid was too low, the NHL contacted the Penguins and Lightning about playing in Prague next year. Ceska is interested in the Rangers because of Czech native and Rangers RW Jaromir Jagr, who "has a personal and business relationship with the company." Jagr arranged a meeting for Ceska and Rangers officials a few months ago "at which both sides emerged optimistic." Rangers GM Glen Sather said, "We thought we had an agreement, but the leagues said it offered this to other teams and they'd get back to us if they turned it down. I'd never turn down a chance to take the team to Europe."  But Ceska "has since said it will raise its bid" for the Rangers. Ceska Dir Vladimir Safarik said, "We understand the NHL is the ruling body. ... I think we'd be able to do it with two other teams. On the other hand, the Rangers would guarantee success for us. It would definitely be better. The Rangers are still our priority." Jagr said, "The Rangers want to do it. The Czech company, they don't want anybody but the Rangers. I don't understand why they can't work it out together" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/21).
