Blog Hound: The Reilly Factor

Longtime SI contributor and back-page columnist Rick Reilly announced over the weekend that he would be leaving the magazine to join ESPN.  Bloggers debate whether the new pairing is a good one.

BUIDING THE BUZZ: Sports Media Challenge's Buzz Manager analyzed blog posts about Reilly’s move. Bloggers believing the new partnership would be successful were tallied positive and represented 33.33% of posts. Bloggers arguing Reilly wouldn’t fit well with his new employers were counted negative at 38.89%. 27.78% were neutral.   • The topic ranked 3 out of 10 on The Buzz, indicating a low level of interest.
  • Positive sentiment stemmed from bloggers who felt shifting companies was a smart business move for Reilly, and many said that they would subscribe to ESPN The Magazine solely because he is now on the staff.
  • Negative sentiment came from bloggers who felt Reilly would not fit well with ESPN’s younger audience. Many lobbied for him to stay away from TV journalism because his previous attempt with “Riffs of Reilly” was not well received.
