Ravens Start New Female Fan Club, Attract Almost 3,500 Members

The Ravens' female fan club, Purple, was launched in August and now has close to 3,500 members, according to Camille Powell of the WASHINGTON POST. The members receive information about the team, as well as "fitness tips from the team's strength and conditioning coach, nutritional advice from the team's nutritionist, and discounts from sponsors." The Ravens say their fan base is 46% female. Club membership is free, but an exclusive group of around 150, called "Lavender Ladies," pay $250 for "access to private autograph sessions, a special day at training camp, and gifts such as wine glasses and handbags." Ravens Senior Dir of Marketing Gabrielle Dow said, "Purple allows women to feel like they're part of something, other than just tickets to the game, tailgating, the standard norm that's offered to them on a daily basis." While 18 of the 32 NFL teams hold Football 101 classes for women, the Ravens "moved away from the Football 101 concept three years ago, in favor of staging a one-night-only" event at M&T Bank Stadium, which allowed more women to participate. Nearly 1,500 female fans attended the Ravens' Purple Evening earlier this month; Football 101 sessions were "usually limited to the first 100 fans" (WASHINGTON POST, 10/20).
FANTASY: According to a July survey done for the Fantasy Sports Trade Association, 14.7 million Americans play fantasy football, and SportsBuff.com Founder & President Jeff Thomas estimated that about 6-10% of those are women (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 10/21).
