NBA, NBRA Deny Report Of Six Refs Disciplined For Gambling

NBA, Union Denies Report That Referees Have
Been Disciplined For Gambling Violations
The NBA has denied a report by the N.Y. Daily News that said it has disciplined six referees "for violating anti-gambling rules for officials,” according to ESPN.com. NBA VP/Basketball Communications Tim Frank said that “the league’s internal review of its entire officiating program … is not complete yet.” Frank: “There is no truth to this report. [Commissioner David Stern] has made it clear that we will have details to share once the review is completed” (ESPN.com, 10/21). The National Basketball Referees Association (NBRA) also denied the report. NBRA Exec Dir Lamell McMorris said, “To my knowledge, no one has been disciplined.” McMorris did acknowledge that “some referees have violated the policy” banning all gambling, even legal forms, by NBA refs except off-season horse racing wagers (Roscoe Nance, USA TODAY, 10/22).

THE REPORT: In N.Y., Mitch Lawrence cited sources saying that the six unidentified officials “were busted for infractions as minor as frequenting casinos,” but the infractions “in no way came close to resembling the crimes" of former NBA ref Tim Donaghy.  In addition to enlisting the help of former federal prosecutor Larry Pedowitz to handle the investigation, Stern has “promised to do more background checks and have the league admit to its mistakes involving officiating more quickly than in the past.” But the league has “done little else to reduce the chances of another gambling scandal,” a fact that “doesn’t sit well with some owners and executives, who are under gag orders that prevent them from going public with their complaints” (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/21).

Venetian Macau Hosts Several
Games During Asian Tour
FAIR GAMING: In Florida, John Denton wrote that the NBA using the Venetian casino for its China Games HQs in the wake of the Donaghy scandal “might come as a shock to some.”  But NBA execs “believe there’s no conflict of interest in holding events in casinos" even in the wake of the Donaghy scandal.” NBA Deputy Commissioner & COO Adam Silver indicated that the scandal “would not keep the NBA from holding events at casinos in the future because the two entities are entirely separate.” Denton notes the NBA, as with the ’07 Las Vegas All-Star game, “insisted that The Venetian remove the Magic-China and Magic-Cavaliers games" from the betting line (FLORIDA TODAY, 10/20).

DEFENDING YOUR LIFE: Meanwhile, after recent invasions at the homes of Knicks C Eddy Curry and Heat F Antoine Walker, the NBA will send security officials to each team in the next few weeks to discuss with players "steps they can take to prevent similar incidents.” NBA officials will “advise players to watch where they go and be alert if they are followed, while also recommending being less flashy with their money and jewelry when they go out” (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/21).
