Sonics' New Marketing Approach Focuses On Team, Not Individuals

Sonics Not Using Durant As Focus
Of New Marketing Campaign
The Sonics’ “Be Part of It” marketing campaign “represents the organization’s desire to shift from emphasizing individual personalities to the collective whole,” according to Gary Washburn of the SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER.  Neither new GM Sam Presti, new coach P.J. Carlesimo nor first-round draft pick Kevin Durant are featured on billboard ads, and the yet-to-be released media guide “does not spotlight Durant.”  Presti: “We’ve taken a real team focus. We’re going to look to use all of our players to market our basketball team.” Washburn notes that last season, billboard ads featured G Ray Allen, G Luke Ridnour and F Rashard Lewis -- “the team’s three most popular players -- as the team celebrated its 40th anniversary.” But Durant “has done more promotional work with Nike and Gatorade than the Sonics,” and while the Trail Blazers introduced No. 1 draft pick Greg Oden to Portland with a rally at Pioneer Courthouse Square, the Sonics brought Durant into town for a small news conference at the Furtado center.” Season-ticket sales so far "have been on par with last season"  (SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER, 10/19).

NEXT QUESTION: In Seattle, Art Thiel notes a new Sonics policy "limits all player interviews to 15 minutes after practice in one area, where interviews can be monitored." Staff at KJR-AM “thought they were to be denied live or phone interviews with players,” after losing Sonics radio rights after last season.  But “apparently, that isn’t the case,” and Sonics PR Dir Tom Savage is meeting Friday with KJR Program Dir Rich Moore “to straighten out matters.” Moore said, “Whether we were partners or not, over the last few years we’ve had good access and felt we were in a win-win relationship. We’ve had no problems with the Mariners and Seahawks, but this year with the Sonics is drastically different” (SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER, 10/19).

HEALTHY GARDEN: In N.Y., Marc Berman notes the Knicks have renewed season-tickets at 91%, a number “significantly higher than last October.” The June 21 renewal deadline was “well before” the September 10 trial date for former Knicks exec Anucha Browne Sanders’ sexual harassment suit against MSG, MSG Chair James Dolan, and team President of Basketball Operations & coach Isiah Thomas. Season-ticket sales for ’06-07 were down 20% from ’05-06, but the team sold out 17 of its last 20 games and finished eighth in the NBA in average attendance at 18,805 (N.Y. POST, 10/19).
